Beginning on September 24, more than 5,000 students, educators and community supporters at over 85 schools and venues across the nation will participate in Go College! Day events celebrating the launch of Go College! Now. As part of the celebration, ( iii ) DESIGN will be hosting a free screening of First Generation, an award-winning documentary following four low-income students through their last years of high school as they become the first in their families to pursue higher education. Afterwards, Maria Arvizu-Rodriguez – an Academic Advisor from Cal Poly’s Educational Opportunity Program – will share about how Cal Poly is serving the needs of low-‐income and first generation students in our county and beyond.
The film will be screened on Thursday, September 24 at 7PM at the Palm Theatre in downtown San Luis Obispo. Admission for the screening is free and all interested community members are welcome, but an RSVP is required at bit.ly/GoCollegeSLO.
The Go College! initiative is an unprecedented partnership between First Generation and Wells Fargo that was created to help close the education gap for underrepresented populations (primarily low-income and first generation students) and raise awareness of college access issues and barriers that these students face when navigating the college search, application and enrollment process.
Go College! Now, built by ( iii ) DESIGN, is a bilingual, ADA-compliant, fully responsive (mobile and tablet‐optimized) web platform that provides students and families much-needed resources to better inform their decision-making process and, for educators, includes a free downloadable curriculum for use in high school settings. Users can also stream 2 versions of First Generation and Take the Pledge, which is custom pledge page created for users to share with their friends and families via social media.
