Junior Giants is back in the City of San Luis Obispo for families with children ages 5 to 13. It’s free to participate in this co-ed program and gear is provided to team members this season.
Families can register for free online before June 4, 2022. This year’s season starts on June 13 and ends August 5, and includes co-ed softball and co-ed baseball in the following divisions: T-ball for children age 5 to 6, Minors for children age 7 to 9, and Majors for children age 10 to 13.
“We love Junior Giants because it offers children athletes a non-competitive environment to play, grow and learn, and it gives family members a chance to participate as volunteers. Participating in Junior Giants in SLO creates lasting memories for a lifetime,” said Megan Risley, the City of San Luis Obispo’s Recreation Coordinator for Community Services.
Every year, the City of San Luis Obispo hosts Junior Giants League, a free, non-competitive and coed summer baseball and softball program for ages 5 to 13. The program is operated by The Giants Community Fund, a 501(c)(3) public charity managed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Players learn the importance of health, education and bullying prevention as well as the Junior Giants Four Bases of Character Development: confidence, integrity, leadership and teamwork.
Working together with the City Parks and Recreation Department, local families and local volunteers, Junior Giants offers youth a chance to learn the basics of baseball and softball during the summer while also discovering the importance of essential life skills. Entering its 27 year, Junior Giants annually serves nearly 24,000 participants in 90 leagues.
Each team needs at least hthree parent/family volunteers: a head coach, an assistant coach, and a team parent. Typically, coaches handle the baseball and softball components and team parents take the lead on the non-baseball programs (i.e. Word of the Week talks, rewards, etc.).
