May 1 is National Law Day and the San Luis Obispo County Law Library, in conjunction with other community service departments, will be hosting an open house and community outreach to bring awareness to the no- and low-cost legal and social services available to our community.

This free event, with hourly guest speakers will be held at the SLO Superior Courthouse and Law Library from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 1st, 2017, to celebrate National Law Day, the rights of being a citizen, and the importance of access to equal justice for all Americans. This celebration of the law will reinforce that each county in the State of California has a law library, and that citizens and local officials should understand their importance as necessary resources in their communities.

The theme this year is the 14 Amendment. Having been ratified nearly 150 years ago, this critical addition to our Constitution guarantees the right to due process and equality for all citizens under the law. It defines citizenship, and bars the States from denying any citizen their rights, privileges, and immunities. Because of this amendment, the Bill of Rights protections became enforceable for the first time against states. In this day and age where the rights and privileges of being a citizen are being questioned, understanding the importance of the 14th Amendment is more essential than ever.

As a vital part of our community and its constitutionally-guaranteed right to access equal justice, the San Luis Obispo County Law Library is committed to making sure people know they have a place to go for legal help and guidance. The San Luis Obispo County Law Library provides essential services to both self-represented litigants and lawyers, as well as access to online resources, references to self-help organizations, and regularly updated printed legal sources. Our resources and doors are open to the public free of charge.
