The Point San Luis Lighthouse Keepers held their final walk through of the Light Station with Tim Duff, Coastal Conservancy project manager, on Tuesday, April 16th. Walking the beautiful grounds and restored buildings, with Mr. Duff were; Stew Jenkins, LHK Board President, John Lindsey, LHK Board Vice President, Rick Rengel, LHK Project Manager, and Loch Dreizler, Port San Luis Facilities Manager.

The group reviewed each of the historic structures, and surrounding landscaping, whose restoration, was substantially funded by grants received from the Conservancy. The work of restoring the historic Light Station began in 1995, with the establishment of the Lighthouse Keepers organization, and has progressed over time from weed abatement and paint scraping to major road construction and the complete remodel of the interior of the West Duplex.

This final review by the Coastal Conservancy marks the completion of what was once just a very big dream for the volunteers and Board members of the Lighthouse Keepers, to fully restore and open to the public this important piece of California and San Luis Obispo County history. A 2008 set of matching grants by the Coastal Conservancy, California Cultural and Historic Endowment and Department of Fish and Wildlife of 1.6 Million dollars, and over 75,000 hours of volunteer labor, has brought the Point San Luis Light Station back to life for the public. But the Keepers are not done yet! The continued preservation, restoration, and operation of the Light Station is our mission, and the next big dream is on the horizon. Come join our happy volunteers!

See you at the Lighthouse!
