Cuyama Buckhorn, located in the Hidden Valley of Enchantment provides a broad range of wellness experiences. Located in the middle of California, in the remote high desert west of Bakersfield and north of Ojai, this 21-room resort provides an easy, energizing winter escape.

BE WELL

This is a place that exudes good energy and outdoor firepits, an olive-framed lawn and outdoor lounge areas make for lots of spots to BE outdoors. Local hikes in the nearby Los Padres National Forest, a vast open sky filled with stars each night, sound baths and wellness events, and a swim in the year-round heated pool and hot tub, or time in the barrel sauna are additional ways to “be.”

EAT WELL

Food is locally-sourced from small family farms near the resort. Menus are created around what’s in season and a chalkboard in the restaurant lists all of the local farmers the property works with, including Cuyama Homegrown, Rock Front Ranch and Cuyama Orchards to name a few.

DRINK WELL

The Buckhorn Bar offers a bar program and wine and beer list that rivals any one would find in a major metropolis. Here, too, one can find local partners including Ventura Spirits and Condor’s Hope and Sagebrush Annie’s wines. Organic Canyon Coffee, a small producer of fine beans, is used throughout the resort, both in the restaurant and available in-room for overnight guests.

SLEEP WELL

Rest is redefined in the high desert where cold night air and the sound of silence set the stage for a fine night of sleep. Crisp Brooklinen sheets make for the coziest of beds, and that cup of Canyon Coffee or Art of Tea tea on one’s private porch is the perfect way to start the day.

WORK WELL

Cuyama Buckhorn provides complete escapism for a corporate retreat of 1-20. Whether it be the place to go to finish one’s novel, or hold a group meeting in the conference room, the resort is primed for meaningful, focused concentration of all sorts.

SPEND TIME WELL

A gathering at Cuyama Buckhorn is stress-free for the host and the attendees. The on-staff team is well-equipped to design the perfect package to suit all needs. Consider a girls’ trip with a sound bath in the morning and a disco ball at night; or a family reunion with Jumbo Jenga, a pool or bocce ball tournament, and a Cinema Under the Stars –anything is possible at this 21-room resort, whether its a complete buyout or just a few of the rooms.

MOVE WELL

Hike, bike, swim, gallop, stretch and more at Cuyama Buckhorn.

SHOP WELL

The Cuyama Buckhorn market is stocked with products all from small and local businesses. Stock up on bandanas, pins, t-shirts and books and stationery created by the Buckhorn’s Artist in Residence partners. Local honey, wood crafts, and a local Outdoors Guide to Cuyama are all available for purchase.

RESORT WELL

Cuyama Buckhorn practices regeneration in all ways. From the deep commitment to, and involvement with the community to the renovations that have been and continue to be made to this 1950s hotel. Over 500 drought-tolerant trees and plants have been planted on the property, including edible plants and herbs used in the restaurant and bar. Over 90% of the property was designed with permeable surfaces instead of traditional materials, allowing more water back into the earth, i.e. excess water is repurposed instead of lost. Existing oil pipes –this was once an area rich in oil mining – and reclaimed wood have been made to build custom furniture.

More details on Cuyama Buckhorn’s community and regenerative programs include:

Cuyama Buckhorn x Kind Traveler

Cuyama Buckhorn is partnering with Kind Traveler. Kind Traveler’s Every Stay Gives Back program allocates $1 per night toward supporting Blue Sky Center, ensuring that 100% of the funds are directed to positively impact the local community. Some of these programs include:

  • Meals provided for Cuyama residents participating in skills-building workshops
  • Supplies for food access workshop, encompassing activities like nopales canning, garlic planting, or seed harvesting
  • Starter plants for Jardines Victoria (Victory Garden) in local residents’ backyard, fostering organic food growth at home
  • Artist-in-residence programs

Highway 166 Beautification Project

Cuyama Buckhorn has been instrumental in creating a $1M beautification initiative along Highway 166. The project aims to bring shaded areas along the roadside with drought-tolerant trees, offering a buffer between the fast-moving highway and the town’s quieter roads. Additionally, informational panels will be installed to educate visitors about the town’s history and land.

PlantPaper

For over a year, Cuyama Buckhorn has exclusively ordered from PlantPaper, a tree-free, and toxin-free toilet paper brand. Since the switch, Cuyama Buckhorn has:

  • Kept 1600+ gallons of bleach out of bodies, waterways, and ecosystems
  • Kept nearly 20,000 gallons of fresh water uncontaminated
  • Kept over 340 square feet of fossil-fuel-derived, single-use plastic out of oceans and landfills
  • Kept about 120 trees in the ground
