The Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo (ECOSLO) is thrilled to announce the launch of its new Tree Planting on Request program, offering residents the opportunity to have a tree planted in their yard or public right-of-way at no cost.

This exciting new initiative allows San Luis Obispo residents to select from a list of five pre-approved tree species, carefully chosen for their suitability for yards or public spaces, their low maintenance needs and their compatibility with city infrastructure, such as power lines. All trees in the program are pre-approved by the City Arborist, Walter Gault, to ensure they thrive in local conditions while avoiding conflicts with utility lines.

Walter Gault, the City of San Luis Obispo’s Urban Forestry Program Coordinator/City Arborist says, “By working with ECOSLO on a pre-approved list of trees, we can streamline the tree request process and get shovels in the ground quicker.”

ECOSLO Executive Director Kendra Paulding adds, “While we have a robust group tree planting program that focuses on planting trees in public spaces, this new Tree Planting on Request program gives residents the opportunity to have a tree of their own in their yard or public right-of-way. ECOSLO will supply the tree, and participants will provide the ongoing care and maintenance.”

This new program supports the City of San Luis Obispo’s goal of planting 10,000 trees by 2035, expanding the area where trees can be planted and enhancing the community’s green spaces.

To participate, residents can visit the Tree Planting Program page at https://www.ecoslo.com/plant-trees and select the “Pick a Tree” button under the Tree Planting section.

For over 50 years, ECOSLO has been dedicated to protecting and preserving the natural resources of San Luis Obispo County.
