Big Brothers Big Sisters of SLO County, in partnership with Halcyon Farms in Arroyo Grande, will have a tour of the farm for volunteer mentors, their mentees and their families on September 7, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. Attendees will tour the Halcyon Farm fields and learn about the organic produce being grown, harvested and purchased at their farm stand.
Partnerships with community organizations, like Halcyon Farms, are crucial to bringing opportunities like the monthly Bigs & Littles adventures to local youth. Whether it’s with a business or another nonprofit, partnerships demonstrate a shared commitment to mentorship opportunities for children.
Sponsored by the SLO County Board of Supervisors and Halcyon Farms, this event is also an example of
the many benefits of mentorships with Big Brothers Big Sisters’ programs. Having access to special
outings, like this farm tour, is one of the reasons children who are mentored are statistically more likely
to graduate from high school, attend college or trade school and have positive relationships with their
community.
Executive Director, Stacy Salame, said, “Taking kids on a tour of a local farm is a great learning experience. They’ll get to see where their food comes from, meet the farmers who grow it, and they might discover an interest in agriculture. We are grateful for the Board of Supervisors and Halcyon Farms for their generosity and community engagement in providing this opportunity. Our volunteers and children in our programs get so much out of these monthly adventures, and we’re so happy to provide an educational outing for them.”
