HumanKind Fair Trade is proud to continue its new initiative, 2% Tuesday, with June’s recipient: the YTT Northern Chumash Tribe. Every Tuesday throughout the month, 2% of the store’s profits will be donated to the Tribe’s nonprofit in support of their Lands Back campaign—an effort to reclaim and steward their ancestral lands on California’s Central Coast.
The 2% Tuesday campaign officially launched in May following a community-wide nomination process, during which more than 80 nonprofits were submitted for consideration. The inaugural recipient was the Cal Poly Cat Program, which received 2% of Tuesday sales in May. The campaign will continue through the end of 2025, spotlighting a new nonprofit each month.
“We’ve always believed that shopping can be a force for good,” said LynAnne Wilton, Store Manager at HumanKind Fair Trade. “With 2% Tuesday, we’re not only supporting artisan communities around the world, but also uplifting the incredible grassroots efforts happening right here in San Luis Obispo. It’s about building a stronger, more compassionate local community—one Tuesday at a time.”
HumanKind was inspired to launch the campaign after seeing similar models at work in other local businesses, including SLO Food Co-op and Café Corazón.
“Creating space in your business model for customers to give back isn’t just doable—it’s powerful,” said Britain Traub, Marketing Manager at SLO Food Co-op. “It builds community trust, boosts awareness of local causes, and reminds everyone that business can be a tool for positive change.”
HumanKind encourages other local businesses to start their own 2% Tuesday campaign or adopt similar give-back programs and share the stories of the nonprofits shaping our region.
