A couple of guys named Steve had a big idea 50 years ago – they wanted to create a non-profit radio station to broadcast news, information, and music on the Central Coast of California. On July 25, 1975, Steve Burrell and Steve Urbani realized their dream when they flipped the switch to turn on the transmitter for local public radio station KCBX.

Over the years, a lot has changed. Personnel have rotated out, though many of the station’s original staff and founders remain. Technology has been updated over the years. One thing has remained the same – the station’s commitment to providing quality information and music programming to its listeners.

On July 26, KCBX will host a 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Octagon Barn in San Luis Obispo. The community is invited to a free afternoon event (11 a.m. – 4 p.m.) with live music, food trucks, trivia and a celebration honoring KCBX founders, supporters and volunteers. In the evening, a ticketed concert at 7 p.m., featuring Damon Castillo with Friends will perform in the Octagon Barn.
