In coordination with CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo, the backyard burning season that typically concludes on April 30 has been extended to June 2, 2025. Due to the high levels of fuel concentrations, this extension allows landowners with active burn permits to continue to reduce fuel and fire hazards on their property for another month.

If land owners still need to obtain a burn permit, burners can visit SLOCleanAir.org to apply and receive both the SLO County Air Pollution Control District (APCD), Backyard Burn Permit and CAL FIRE’s Residential LE-62a Burn Permit simultaneously.

Please be aware:

  • Monitor weather conditions and only burn on permissive burn days.
  • Always adhere to the terms and conditions of your burn permit.
  • Ensure that a water source and tools are available on-site for fire control.
  • Follow all local and state regulations to minimize smoke impacts on air quality.

For more information about the backyard burning program, visit SLOCleanAir.org or contact CAL FIRE San Luis Obispo County Fire Department at 805-242-6250.

By working together to manage vegetation, reduce fire hazards and protect air quality from potential wildfire smoke, we can help protect our community while supporting healthy ecosystems.
