The SLO County Arts Council is happy to announce the winner of the Poetry Out Loud Competition – SLO Classical Academy Senior Sadie Richert. Sadie will compete at the State Competition hosted by the California Arts Council on March 7.

Nearly one thousand students competed across the county this year in hybrid competitions. The school winners from San Luis Obispo Classical Academy, San Luis Obispo, Nipomo, Morro Bay, and Coast Union High School then participated in a virtual county competition which aired on February 10th. The winner of the county competition is awarded a scholarship and her school receives a stipend for educational materials.

“I think that poetry is really beautiful and meaningful, and a lot of things in poetry are very true.” said Sadie Richert, County Competition Winner. “To be able to learn the poems and really sit with them and become part of them, and then to be able to share them with other people is a reason why you should always keep doing poetry.”

Richert continued, noting, “The competition is nice as an incentive, but the real worth lies in actually living with the poems and being able to feel like you understand them, and then you can share them with others.”
