Hillel of San Luis Obispo proudly announces that its Executive Director, Lauren Bandari, will be honored with the Inaugural Jewish Heritage Award at a special recognition ceremony at the California State Assembly on May 18, 2026.
This prestigious award, presented in recognition of Jewish American Heritage Month, celebrates individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Jewish life, community leadership, and civic engagement across California. As the inaugural recipient, Bandari is being recognized for her transformative leadership in building a vibrant, inclusive Jewish community at California Polytechnic State University and throughout the San Luis Obispo region.
Under Bandari’s leadership, SLO Hillel has experienced significant growth in student engagement, innovative programming, and community partnerships. She has been instrumental in fostering a welcoming environment for Jewish students of all backgrounds, while also creating opportunities for broader campus dialogue, cultural education, and interfaith connection.
Assemblywoman Dawn Addis chose Lauren for this award in honor of her vision and dedication to Jewish life in a smaller community and on campus. Her work has not only strengthened Jewish identity and pride but has also built meaningful bridges across the wider community.
In addition to her role at Hillel, Bandari has played a key leadership role in the broader Jewish community, previously serving as Executive Director of the San Luis Obispo Jewish Community Center-Federation and continuing her service on its Board of Directors. Her commitment to community-building, education, and leadership development has left a lasting impact on students, families, and community members
alike.
The award ceremony at the State Assembly will bring together elected officials, community leaders, and advocates to honor outstanding contributions to Jewish life and heritage across California.
“I am deeply honored to receive this recognition,” said Bandari. “This award reflects the incredible students, partners, and community members who make Jewish life in San Luis Obispo so dynamic and meaningful. Together, we are building a strong and enduring future.”
