The San Luis Obispo’s public transportation system recently garnered international recognition for its inclusive and enhanced bus-riding experience.

SLO Transit was one of just three transportation agencies in North America to earn an Innovation Award from the American Public Transportation Association. SLO Transit earned the award for being the first public transportation system in the world to, in collaboration with Bishop Peak Technology, integrate reactive smart lighting on its buses to better communicate with individuals who have hearing, visual, cognitive, or selective-cognitive impairments.

“Being internationally recognized by APTA is truly an honor.  SLO Transit is pleased to introduce innovative technology to benefit our riders and community” said Matt Horn Public Works Director. “The City will continue to introduce technology and innovation that will improve the rider experience and encourage public transportation as the preferred method of travel in the City.”

To further Major City Goals related to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as well as Sustainable Transportation, City buses now have reactive smart lighting programmed to provide visual cues that alert riders to various bus operations, such as when a stop is requested, doors are opening and closing, or when a wheelchair ramp is being deployed. This includes a full spectrum of LED lights embedded alongside the standard white interior cabin lights of City buses.

SLO Transit is the local fixed-route transit operation for the City of San Luis Obispo, operating out of the City’s Public Works Department.  SLO Transit operates eight vehicles along eight fixed routes within the 23 square miles of the city limits of San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly.  SLO Transit is currently operating a modified bus schedule.
