Community members hoping to make a difference in San Luis Obispo have several volunteer opportunities for either a single day of service or on an ongoing basis.
The City of San Luis Obispo is currently recruiting volunteers who are interested in public art, the outdoors, history and storytelling, maintaining the environment and keeping SLO clean, safe and enjoyable for all.
“Volunteering can help you grow as a person and help the community flourish,” said Kiersten Anderson, the City’s Volunteer Program Coordinator. “Your time, heart and skill can be matched with meaningful service opportunities that bring your passion to life and help us co-create a healthier, safer and more vibrant San Luis Obispo.”
Regular and ongoing volunteer opportunities (flexible schedules, autonomous service):
- Adopt-a-Park Volunteer
- Adopt-a-Pathway Volunteer (email [email protected] directly if interested)
- Beautification Volunteer
- Jack House Docent
Single days of service:
- Oct: 15: Box Art Jury volunteers (9 AM – 1 PM)
- Oct. 15 & Nov. 19: Whale Rock Reservoir Trail Support (9 AM – noon, in Cayucos)
- Nov. 1: Pumpkin Smash Event Volunteer (3 PM – 8 PM )
- Nov. 2: Arbor Day (9 AM – 1 PM)
- Nov. 14: RecycleRight Volunteer (Thursday evenings; 5:30 – 8:30 PM)
The City provides volunteers with a user-friendly online dashboard, called Engage SLO, to view and sign up for volunteer roles, manage their schedules, track their contribution, and access valuable resources.
“It’s easy to create a profile on Engage SLO and select the causes you care about and interests you have, and you can set your availability to be notified once new opportunities are posted,” Anderson said and continued, “Of course, should anyone need assistance or have questions, please give us a call or send along an email.”
Volunteering can cultivate a strong sense of belonging and broaden one’s social and professional circles. Volunteers often gain new skills that can help them advance both personally and professionally and can lead to improved overall well-being.
The City of San Luis Obispo offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for youth and adults, individuals and group, such as school classes, student clubs, community clubs and team and professional and retiree groups. Serve with friends, family, colleagues and classmates to learn about stewardship, local government, and earn community service hours and shout outs on City communication channels (among other volunteer appreciation activities).
