The City of San Luis Obispo is preparing plans for the 2026 Paving Project and invites community members to attend the Active Transportation Committee meeting on Thursday, January 15, 2026.  At the ATC meeting, community members will be able to learn about the project and provide input to guide final designs including potential signage and striping changes.

Upcoming Active Transportation Committee Meeting:
When: Thursday, January 15, 2026
Time: 6 – 8 p.m.
Where: City Hall Council Chambers (990 Palm Street)

Project Design Elements
The City’s annual paving projects are primarily meant to maintain and repair paved streets to extend the life of existing pavement surface and refresh roadway markings. However, this also provides an opportunity to implement accessibility and safety improvements based on public feedback and as recommended in the City’s adopted Active Transportation Plan and Draft Vision Zero (Traffic Safety) Plan, where funding allows. These improvements are important for meeting the City’s safety, mobility, and climate action goals, and can often be installed at a lower cost as part of a larger maintenance project. Preliminary design strategies proposed with the 2026 Paving Project include:

  • Fill cracks and potholes, install a maintenance seal coat on roadway pavement and replace faded pavement markings.
  • Consider features to reduce illegal speeding, such as speed cushions, on select streets.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle enhancements via pavement markings and signage changes, where appropriate and as funding allows.
  • Installation of red paint and/or signage to restrict parking that impedes visibility of pedestrian crossings (“daylighting”) near schools and parks.

Construction is expected to start in late summer of 2026 and last several months. Properties along streets with major changes will be notified of construction dates and times. All efforts will be made to minimize disruption to driveway access on these routes during construction activities.

Project Map
The overview map below identifies streets to be included in the 2026 Paving Project area.

Note that streets shown are based on preliminary plans and cost estimates. Street locations included in final project plans may vary based on funding resources.

Following the ATC meeting, staff will use community feedback provided to guide final project plans, which will be presented to the City Council for approval in spring of 2026. Construction is expected to begin in late summer 2026. Questions and input can also be provided via email to the City Transportation Division at [email protected].
