The Performing Arts Center San Luis Obispo is celebrating its 30th Anniversary Season, marking three decades of artistic excellence, community connection, and cultural enrichment on the Central Coast.
Since opening in 1996, the PAC has welcomed millions of patrons and thousands of performances, becoming one of the Central Coast’s most important cultural gathering places.
“For 30 years, the Performing Arts Center has been a place where our community comes together to experience the power of live performance, celebrate important milestones, and create lasting memories,” said Ryan Gruss, director of the Performing Arts Center. “This anniversary is an opportunity to honor everyone who helped bring this vision to life and to look ahead to the next generation of artists, audiences, community and campus arts organizations, and students who will shape the future of the PAC.”
After decades of unsuccessful efforts dating back to 1958, Cal Poly, the City of San Luis Obispo, and the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center forged a unique partnership in 1986 that would finally bring the dream of a performing arts center to life. Hundreds of community donors contributed $12.5 million toward the $30 million project, including a transformational gift of $2.1 million from entrepreneur Christopher Cohan.
On Sept. 27, 1996, San Luis Obispo welcomed a magnificent new performing arts center, ushering in a new era for arts and culture in the region. The Center provided local arts organizations with a world-class venue to grow and thrive while expanding cultural opportunities for local audiences through major touring productions, internationally acclaimed artists, and Broadway performances presented by Cal Poly Arts.
Over the past 30 years, the PAC has become far more than a venue for exceptional performances. It serves as a gathering place for the community, hosting approximately 350 events annually, including public performances, graduations, celebrations, memorials, conferences, meetings, campus orientations, and even serving as a polling location.
“It’s the community that really makes the PAC special. It’s a place to get together and see all sorts of incredible music and art. There’s nothing better than walking in and seeing friends and belonging here,” said longtime PAC supporters Candace and Bert Forbes.
Through donor support provided by the Foundation for the Performing Arts Center, the PAC Outreach School Matinee Program also introduces nearly 10,000 local students to the power of live performance each year at no cost to schools or families.
“To me, the PAC means opportunity, to learn, to be entertained, and to be inspired,” said local student Eden Sook. “Whenever I leave the building, I start thinking about how I can make a positive impact on others, just as the people I’ve seen here have impacted me.”
On Saturday, Sept. 26, the Performing Arts Center will host a 30th Anniversary Celebration to kick off the festivities. The event will feature continuous live performances throughout the building, dancing, and food and beverages from local restaurants, wineries, breweries and more. Tickets will go on sale to the public on Monday, August 3 at PACSLO.ORG.
The anniversary celebration will continue throughout the season with a dynamic lineup of performances from the PAC’s resident arts organizations and presenters. Cal Poly Arts, the PAC’s resident presenter, has announced a season featuring more than 30 events, including Broadway productions, internationally acclaimed artists, dance, music, and family programming. Resident companies including Festival Mozaic, the San Luis Obispo Symphony, Civic Ballet of San Luis Obispo, the San Luis Obispo Master Chorale, Opera San Luis Obispo, and others will also present performances throughout the anniversary season.
The Foundation for the Performing Arts Center is also launching a 30th Anniversary fundraising campaign. FPAC helps keep the Center accessible and ensure a strong future by supporting the School Matinee Program, providing grants that help local arts organizations offset rental costs, and helps fund vital improvements that will ensure the Center continues to thrive as the premier cultural destination on the Central Coast.
