The Promotores Collaborative of SLO County housed by Center for Family Strengthening, presents a special Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) event in Arroyo Grande, highlighting Latin American culture and traditions. The event features traditional stories, music and dance with performances by Danza Azteca Tonantzin Arroyo Grande, Santa Maria’s Ballet Folklórico Corazón de la Costa, Ballet Folklórico de Sacramento and Mariachi Mexicanismo.

Honoring Our Ancestors, A Day of the Dead Celebration will take the stage at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, November 2, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $30 to $40; students and children are $15 to $20. Tickets are available online at www.clarkcenter.org or from the Clark Center Ticket Office at (805) 489-9444. The Clark Center is located on the northwest corner of the Arroyo Grande High School campus at 487 Fair Oaks Avenue in Arroyo Grande, CA. Plenty of free parking is available in front of the theater. The public is also invited to attend a free Community Health and Resources Fair being held in the plaza adjacent to the Center before the show, beginning at 1 p.m.

Latin American culture is a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of pre-Columbian civilizations, European colonization and the struggle for independence. Indigenous cultures, like the Aztecs, flourished before European arrival. The Spanish and Portuguese conquered the region, resulting in the establishment of vast colonial empires and the blending of indigenous, European and African cultures. In the early 19th century, revolutions swept through Latin America, establishing independent nations. Stories, music and dance reflect this history. The blending of diverse cultures and the spirit of the people and ancestors will be remembered and honored at this event.

In addition to the stage presentation, ofrendas altares (offerings altars) will be displayed and 20 community organizations will have booths sharing information about health services and resources available in San Luis Obispo County and the Santa Maria Valley. A Catrinas Contest will award prizes to those with the best Day-of-the-Dead-themed makeup and costumes.

This event is being produced by the Promotores Collaborative of San Luis Obispo, whose mission is to build, foster and support a network of “Promotores” who are trained community health workers. A program of the nonprofit Center for Family Strengthening, Promotores envisions sustainable, diverse, comprehensive and equal access to healthcare and services among all members of the community, particularly among Hispanics in the region. Funds raised will support the Promotores Program for the coming year.
