In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Vitalant is partnering with News Channel 3-11-12 to host Day of Service Blood Drives in San Luis Obispo, Santa Maria, and Santa Barbara, January 19. Dr. King’s lifelong commitment to social justice, equality, and service continues to inspire acts of compassion and community service across the nation.

As part of National Blood Donor Month, nonprofit Vitalant is calling on the community to help save lives at a time when blood donations are critically needed. The start of the year often brings a decline in donations due to holiday travel, school breaks, and fewer workplace blood drives—making donors especially vital during January.

To thank those who roll up their sleeves, Vitalant is offering donors 26 chances to win $500 to kick off 2026.

Donors of all blood types are encouraged to participate, with a critical need for type O blood and platelet donors. Type O blood can help the most patients due to its broad compatibility, while platelets are essential for patients undergoing cancer treatment, trauma care, and complex surgeries.

Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. That includes cancer patients, trauma victims, newborns and their mothers, individuals living with chronic illnesses, and patients preparing for surgery or organ transplants.

Community members are encouraged to honor Dr. King’s legacy by making a life-saving donation. To learn more or schedule an appointment, visit vitalant.org/mlk, download the Vitalant app, or call 877-25-VITAL (877-258-4825).
