Michael Nowak

Orchestra Novo’s Artistic Director and Conductor, Michael Nowak brings unique Hollywood film expertise to this project. Maestro Nowak has conducted the scores of over 80 films and numerous tv shows, including the Academy Award winner, Life of Pi, and Denzel Washington’s Oscar-contending big-screen adaptation of August Wilson’s “Fences.”

The Wizard of Oz was a technical marvel for the MGM studio in the late 1930s. Today, MGM has stunningly re-mastered this timeless classic. Audience members will be mesmerized by the brilliantly restored images, accompanied by full symphony orchestra, led by Maestro Michael Nowak, playing entirely new transcriptions of Harold Arlen’s brilliant lost scores. Hearing Judy Garland’s original 1939 studio recordings, backed by lush, live orchestration will create an extraordinary New Year’s Eve experience. Moviegoers will be treated to the Oscar-winning film as it has never been seen before.

Emmy-Award winning producer of Live from Lincoln Center, John Goberman created this new form of film/concert presentation, symphonic cinema, performing 20th century symphonic works composed for film and orchestra known as, A Symphonic Night at the Movies.

Tickets are available now in the Emerald City, Yellow Brick Road, Lollipop Guild, and Flying Monkeys sections at the PACSLO. Join us for our Ruby Slippers Champagne Reception at intermission. Reserve your space today at PACSLO.org. Sponsorships are available.

Typically only larger metropolitan areas such as Boston and San Francisco are able to present a program of this magnitude. This acclaimed production shines the spotlight on San Luis Obispo County as an arts and entertainment destination. This family-friendly event is a shining example of our community’s cultural richness.

In summer of 2005, the program premiered to sold out crowds at Wolf Trap and the Ravinia Festival. Claire Marie Blaustein of The Washington Post declared, “It was an exciting evening, and the grander message of this event was truly something I found in my own back yard – the five children sitting next to me…who had never seen the movie before. They were as enraptured at their first sights of the Emerald City as I was seeing it with new eyes.”
