A naming dedication ceremony for the Dr. Frank R. Martinez Building was held on May 31st at Cuesta College’s San Luis Obispo campus. Faculty, staff, administration, students, community and family members were in attendance to celebrate the legacy of Cuesta College Superintendent / President Emeritus Dr. Frank Martinez.
“It’s an honor to be associated with this building because it represents the curriculum, education, and learning, and this is why we’re here,” said Dr. Martinez.
The Cuesta College Board of Trustees approved the naming of the San Luis Obispo Campus Instructional Building as the Dr. Frank R. Martinez Building in December 2018 to recognize the depth and breadth of Dr. Martinez’s work and his unique contributions to supporting student success. “In recognition of his exemplary career and relentless commitment to Cuesta College, the Board of Trustees acted to rename the San Luis Obispo Campus Instructional Building in Dr. Frank Martinez’s honor,” said Dr. Jill Stearns, Cuesta College Superintendent / President. “Frank’s imprint is evident in every facet of this great institution. He is a true pioneer, sharing a wealth of history, passion, and stewardship for Cuesta College.”
Dr. Martinez joined Cuesta College in 1964 as the Assistant Superintendent/Vice President. He became Superintendent/President in 1977 and remained in the position until his retirement in 1988.
“His 25 years of service to the college and the community had an immense impact on generations of faculty that have reflected the best in education,” said Mr. Pete Sysak, Cuesta College Board of Trustees President. “Cuesta College is honored to have his leadership for so many years and have future students know that leadership and dedication.”
The Dr. Frank R. Martinez Building is the first Measure-L funded facility to open at Cuesta College. The 32,000 square foot, two-story structure was completed in Fall 2017 and houses eight high-capacity, multi-discipline classrooms and a forum-sized classroom on the ground level. The second floor is comprised of more than 40 offices, staff lounges, and meeting rooms.
