Woods Humane Society is excited to announce the opening of the new Daphne Fahsing Spay & Neuter Clinic in Atascadero.
Pet owners can now make appointments online at SpaySLOCounty.com to schedule their dog or cat for surgery. Pets undergoing surgery may also receive vaccinations, microchipping and more to help keep them healthy, safe and eligible for licensing.
Located at Woods North County (2300 Ramona Road, Atascadero), the new spay and neuter clinic will provide fundamental veterinary services at affordable costs for residents in northern San Luis Obispo County and surrounding counties. The focus of Woods Humane Society’s high- volume and high-value spay and neuter efforts is to reduce the number of homeless or otherwise unwanted dogs and cats who enter into county shelters every year while rising to meet the needs of local residents and their pets.
Simply put, there is a feline overpopulation concern in San Luis Obispo County with issues relating to “stray cats” among other animal-related complaints reported to SLO County Animal Services. Some complaints include stray cats giving birth to unwanted litters on private property, stray cats being aggressive to house pets or causing property damage (spraying, defecating in gardens, etc.) and cats preying on birds, wildlife or other sick or injured strays.
Working with the County Animal Services Department, along with local rescue and trap, neuter, return programs (TNR), Woods Humane Society has provided over 27,000 spay and neuter surgeries since the opening of Woods-Cashin Spay & Neuter Clinic at the San Luis Obispo facility. Woods is currently able to provide 4,000 surgeries annually; with the opening of the new clinic in Atascadero, the goal has increased to 6,500 surgeries per year.
SLO County Animal Services Manager, Dr. Eric Anderson states, “Unwanted litters of kittens and overpopulation of cats is a concern throughout the region, but the uncontrolled expansion of community cat populations is a particularly significant concern in the North County. Having accessible, low cost spay and neuter services in that area is an essential step to addressing that challenge.”
The Daphne Fahsing Spay & Neuter Clinic will remove many of the barriers to spay and neuter services in the North County. “The opening of this clinic is a major step forward for animal welfare in San Luis Obispo County,” said Jill Tucker, Executive Director of Woods Humane Society. “Ensuring that spay and neuter services are both accessible and affordable is critical to creating a humane community, and we are thrilled to be able to meet this urgent need for area residents.”
