In keeping with Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) strong commitment to involving the local community in matters concerning the decommissioning of Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP), the company announced today that applications are now being accepted for its newly created Diablo Canyon Decommissioning Engagement Panel.

This local, non-regulatory stakeholder group will consist of up to 11 members who will provide community input to PG&E as it prepares a site-specific plan to decommission DCPP.

“We are absolutely focused on safely operating Diablo Canyon to the end of its current operating licenses. At the same time, it’s important that we plan now for the safe and responsible decommissioning of the facility, which will begin after the federal licenses expire in 2024 and 2025. We value our place in the community and understand the importance of gathering input and feedback as we develop the decommissioning plan. We strongly encourage members of our community to submit applications for the panel and we look forward to gaining their insights,” said Jon Franke, Vice President of Power Generation.

Members of the community who are interested in participating on the engagement panel can obtain and submit applications at the panel website. Applications are due on or before March 21, 2018.

A formation committee that is comprised of local community leaders and PG&E will select representatives for the engagement panel who broadly reflect the diverse community and stakeholder viewpoints in proximity to DCPP.

PG&E anticipates the engagement panel will be selected by early April and for the first meeting to occur later that month.

The meetings will provide members of the panel with opportunities to learn about the technical aspects of the decommissioning process and provide input. This forum will also provide opportunities to engage with PG&E on the potential future use of the site and the lands that surround DCPP. Meetings will occur throughout the year and will be open to the public in order to receive additional community feedback.
