The Assessor, in collaboration with the County Information Technology Department, initiated a paperless office project. The project will continue throughout fiscal year 2018-19. It includes the scanning of over 2,200,000 paper documents in over 168,000 parcel files.
An outside vendor specializing in document scanning is producing digital documents of superior quality and at a much lower cost than if the process were performed in-house. Property file shipments began April 12, 2018 and will continue at a rate of 6,000 files every 2 weeks for the next 14 months. As a result, there may be a short delay (24 to 48 hours) in retrieving property files if it is off site being digitized. Anyone planning to visit the Assessor’s office, may want to contact the office prior to coming in to ensure the property file information is available.
The digitization of the parcel files will benefit both the public and office staff. Once digitized access to all property files, for staff and property owners, will be available from either the Atascadero or the San Luis Obispo office location. Staff will be more efficient and able to serve you better!
While the property file documents will be readily available to property owners and Assessor staff, they will not be available to other County departments or the general public on the website, as much of the information contained in the files are confidential in nature.
The Assessor expects the project to be completed by July 2019.
