The San Luis Obispo County Farmers’ Market Association farmers market logoreported record breaking single-day sales at its Saturday morning market July 25, 2015 in San Luis Obispo.

SLOCFMA Executive Director, Peter Jankay, said vendors sold over five percent more product July 25 than the single-day sales record set August 30, 2014.

“We’re especially thrilled with this number because it’s not even our busiest time of year,” Jankay said. “Sales are typically higher in August, so we may see more record-breaking days next month.”

Last Saturday’s all time high of $30,417, in addition to increased sales at other local markets, bucks the trend most farmers’ markets are facing nationwide. A January 2015 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows sales growth at farmers’ markets has lost momentum.

The SLO County Farmers’ Market Association operates five weekly markets in Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo and Arroyo Grande. Jankay said the association continually innovates new ways to attract customers, including the recent addition of live cooking demonstrations at four of five markets and wine tasting at the Saturday market in San Luis Obispo.

“Visiting your local market is as much of a social outing as it is a shopping trip,” Jankay said. “See your friends and neighbors, glean your farmer’s recipes, and be happy knowing your groceries are high quality and locally produced.”
