San Luis Coastal Unified School District (SLCUSD) made the list of “Best School Districts for Your Buck” in a recent survey of school districts in Southern California. Of 153 school districts analyzed, SLCUSD placed fourth on NerdWallet.com’s list.

NerdWallet is an online resource that provides tools and research from leading experts in the financial field. The site weighed a district’s affordability, standardized test scores, college readiness and student-to-teacher ratio in 10 counties including San Luis Obispo, Kern, San Bernardino, Imperial and San Diego Counties.

“Southern California is one of the priciest places to live … As well, the most affluent areas tend to produce high-performing schools, posing a challenge for families who are looking for great schools and affordable homes,” the writer said.

At a median value of $484,900, homes in the San Luis Obispo area are more affordable than most districts on the list. Student-to-teacher ratios are low, with one teacher for every 19 students. The district also won several awards in the past few years, including the California Distinguished School designation and a National Blue Ribbon award.

“We’re honored to make the list,” said SLCUSD Superintendent Eric Prater. “Our faculty and staff should be proud of the level of education they’re providing to our students”
