Seven companies have recently been selected for the 2013 SLO HotHouse and a crowdsourcing campaign has been launched to help support the teams in the program. The Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Cal Poly, which runs the program, has launched an Indiegogo campaign with a goal of raising $70,000 to help pay for program and operational expenses including the $7,500 that each of the seven teams receives as startup capital. The program has raised $52,000 from local businesses over the past three years as well as $178,000 through in-kind donations, including office equipment, heavily reduced rent and electrical work amongst many other contributions. The HotHouse was started three years ago with one-time seed money from Cal Poly and has since subsisted on $25,000 annually from the City as well as contributions from local businesses and Cal Poly Alumni donors.
