The SLO HotHouse – a community partnership with Cal Poly that supports students and community members as they create new innovations and launch start-up businesses – is seeking a new downtown location. Its current home at 955 Morro St. is part of the Chinatown redevelopment project and was always known to be a temporary location. The University recently put out a request for proposals seeking a lease agreement for 6,000-10,000 sq. ft of office/commercial that includes connected residential space for 40-80 upper division students. The RFP process is open until April 25; several firms have already responded with creative ideas and the evaluation of proposals is expected to begin in the coming weeks. The initiative to keep the HotHouse in the community – versus on campus – is one widely supported by the many businesses that provide mentoring and financial support to the burgeoning entrepreneurs.
