San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre (SLO REP) announces their upcoming 2023-24 season. Season 77, will run from July 2023 through June 2024, and will include five main stage season shows and five UBU’s Other Shoe Staged Readings.
In addition, there are four special shows including the Academy of Creative Theatre’s (ACT) family shows of Honk Jr! and Suite Surrender, the annual holiday production of A Christmas Story and special gala musical production – Beehive: The 60’s Musical. SLO REP will stage all 14 of these shows at the intimate city playhouse located at 888 Morro Street in downtown San Luis Obispo.
The summer kicks off with an adaptation of the beloved fable, Honk Jr! from July 14 — July 23, 2023. This production features 14 – 20 young actors from the ACT program.
The main stage season begins with Stones in His Pockets from Aug. 11 – Aug. 27, 2023, in which two actors play 15 roles in a comedic, yet tragic take on the effects of the Hollywood dream in a small Irish town.
The first musical of the season features the “Little Sisters of Hoboken” in the zany musical revue, Nunsense, from Sept. 15 – Oct. 15, 2023.
The holidays kick off as SLO REP brings Ralphie and his Christmas wish for a Red Ryder b.b. gun to the stage in the classic A Christmas Story from Nov. 17 – Dec. 23, 2023.
Next up will be ACT’s winter production, featuring young actors in Suite Surrender from Jan 12 – 21, 2024, a hilarious riot of a love note to the classic farces of the 1930s and 1940s.
Then, the gala musical, Beehive: The 60’s Musical from Feb. 9 – Mar. 10, 2024, which celebrates the female voices of the decade and features hits such as “My Boyfriend’s Back,” “Be My Baby,” “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Me and Bobby McGee.”
What the Constitution Means to Me (Mar. 29 – Apr. 14, 2024) is a hopeful and achingly human one woman play that traces the profound relationships between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives.
The Thanksgiving Play (May 3 – 19, 2024) by playwright Larissa FastHorse is a wickedly clever satire about a troupe of well-meaning, but misguided teaching artists who scramble to create a school pageant that somehow celebrates both turkey day and Native American Heritage Month.
SLO REP’s 77th season wraps up with the hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era workplace – 9 to 5, The Musical (June 7 – 30, 2024). With music by Dolly Parton, audiences will be tapping their toes and cheering as Violet, Judy and Doralee give their workplace a dream makeover.
