SLOIFF-Screening---If-You-Build-It-Poster_small 15Join the Center for Expressive Technologies, the CSU Entertainment Industry Initiative, ConsciousBuild, Inc and Journeyman International for a reception, screening and open discussion.

As part of the 20th Annual SLO International Film Festival, Cal Poly is hosting a reception, screening and open discussion centered on the 2013 documentary, If You Build It. The open discussion will focus on two local organizations, Journeyman International and ConsciousBuild, Inc., and their efforts surrounding humanitarian and public interest design. The event takes place from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, March 7 in Building 3, Room 213 on the Cal Poly campus.

If You Build It provides a window into the intersection of public education and socially responsible design. The movie follows designer-activists Emily Pilloton and Matthew Miller as they lead their high school students in Bertie County, NC, through a year-long set of design and build projects that show the power of re-thinking public education, the role of design, and the importance of community.

A reception for the event begins at 6 p.m. on O’Neill Green; screening to start at 6:30. The evening concludes with an open discussion featuring Journeyman International and ConsciousBuild about the practice of responsible design.

The event is free to members of the Cal Poly Community with an active Cal Poly ID. Registration by 3/1/2014 is required (http://www.eventbrite.com/preview?eid=10596375043). Members of the general community can purchase tickets for $10 each online at http://slofilmfest.org/tickets-passes/ and are available at the door.
