Spokes, the nonprofit support center for Central Coast nonprofits, is launching a new daylong training called the Spokes Board Academy, sponsored by PG&E on Friday October 19, 2018. With over 2700 nonprofit organizations in San Luis Obispo County, it is possible one out of every 15 residents is needed to serve on a nonprofit board.
Members of a nonprofit board of directors are volunteers who assume the legal and financial responsibilities of the nonprofit. It is imperative that those who serve on a board have the skills and knowledge needed to do it well. The Spokes Board Academy will provide comprehensive training that covers everything nonprofit board members need to know to effectively govern their chosen nonprofit organization.
Whether someone is new to board service or have served for years, they will gain practical knowledge of nonprofit management and skills to advance their mission.
The Spokes Board Academy will answer important questions such as:
- What are the legal and governance responsibilities of nonprofit board members? Am I liable?
- Why is managing a nonprofit organization different from other corporations and businesses? How do we achieve our mission?
- What is the board member’s role in establishing and maintaining productive relationships with fellow board members and nonprofit staff? How can I be most impactful as a leader?
- Why is fundraising so important? How can I overcome my fear of fundraising?
Spokes is the only nonprofit resource center on the Central Coast that trains, consults, and supports nonprofit board members, staff, and volunteers to lead their organizations with greater expertise and efficiency.
