Sierra Vista Regional medical Center and CAPSLO Family & Community Support Services Division have partnered to create a parenting support group for new dads. There are many classes offered locally that focus on motherhood and parenting as a whole, but support specifically tailored for fathers often gets overlooked. This new program aims to give men an opportunity to share their parenting experiences and socialize with other new dads in their peer group who may have similar questions and concerns about the adjustment to fatherhood.
The group is led by David Garcia, a father and certified parent educator with expertise in positive discipline, active parenting and family strengthening. CAPSLO has been working on fatherhood initiatives for several years, offering resources that help dads better connect with their children, peers and partner. Follow-up with these families show less depression and anxiety and improve communication among parents, leading to a more stable household.
The initial class will start on Tuesday, August 29, 2017, and meet weekly for six-weeks. Fathers should bring their new babies with them to class, which will also give mom a few hours to herself. Organizers hope to offer the program four times a year. Class size is limited, so participants are encouraged to register ahead of time by calling (844) 673-4320.
“Being a new dad can bring many new challenges,” said Garcia. “They’re figuring out how to balance fatherhood and their career, while also keeping their relationship with their partner strong. It can be challenging to find that balance and figure out their role.”
In addition to healthy conversation and hands-on activities, the support group teaches positive coping skills, strategies for overcoming the challenges of fatherhood, building strong relationships with your children, co-parenting, child development, infant basics, toddler activities and self-care. Snacks will also be provided.
Other classes and support groups are available at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, including: prepared childbirth, baby care and breastfeeding. For more information about these and other current offerings, please visit www.sierravistaregional.com.
