Local and online retailer The Sock Drawer is donating more than 200 pairs of fun novelty socks to healthcare workers at Dignity Health, Sierra Vista hospital and beyond to thank the workers for their contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Last week, the business donated 100 pairs to Dignity Health, 100 to Sierra Vista and several more pairs to a small group of medical workers in Michigan who are longtime fans.
Brooke English, owner and founder of The Sock Drawer since it opened on the Central Coast in 2007, said that she’s seen so many people in our community finding some way to help, and this was just one way her business could give back.
“It definitely feels good to be able to do something,” English said. “We’re a small business, and like pretty much every business right now, times are tight. But we thought about what we have and what we can do, and what we have is socks.”
The Sock Drawer has closed its brick-and-mortar shop in downtown SLO for now but remains open online and is continuing to ship orders of novelty socks and other gift items from its warehouse.
“Our products are about bringing people joy, and if there’s anyone who deserves that right now, it’s all the nurses, doctors and other essential medical workers out there,” English said. “We hope this puts a smile on their faces.”
Aside from the local groups, the other group that received a donation is a team of emergency healthcare workers in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Months ago, one of the members of this group began tagging The Sock Drawer in photos on social media, wearing the store’s novelty socks with Crocs shoes just for fun. The Sock Drawer took notice and decided to send some free pairs to the “Socks and Crocs” fan group.
“They’re hilarious. We had to hook them up,” English said. “We just happened to have this existing connection with this group of healthcare workers, so when we were thinking about who to donate to, they came up right away, in addition to our local donations.”
English also said she encourages everyone ordering from The Sock Drawer to pick up an extra pair of socks or other gift for the medical professionals they know.
“It’s just an affordable, fun way to thank someone that’s also actually useful,” she said. “Let’s spread as much joy into the hospitals and medical offices as we can right now!”
