According to Oxfam, a global organization working to end the injustice of poverty, nearly 11 million items of clothing a week end up in landfill in the United Kingdom alone. Throw away fashion is increasing pressure on our planet through the carbon footprint of new clothes, amounting to an equal amount of carbon generated by a plane trip around the world 900 times.

“Shopping second hand is my first choice for finding exactly what I need while reducing my impact on the environment and on my wallet,” said San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon, a purveyor of local thrift shops. “It’s a great way to support the many nonprofit organizations that run our local thrift stores.”

Men and women are encouraged to upcycle and recycle their wardrobes by shopping vintage and second hand. The Hope Chest features carefully chosen, gently used clothing, furniture, household goods, jewelry and vintage items, all of which are creatively merchandised.
