Zoning regulations dictate where and how much housing can be built within San Luis Obispo city limits – and how easily the housing can be built. As the City of San Luis Obispo updates its zoning regulations, the SLO Chamber is advocating for simplified and predictable regulations that would help increase the variety and amount of housing that is critical to the health of our community.
With the help of community and Chamber committee input, the city has completed its assessment of the strengths and weaknesses of the current regulations and will be using that information to draft changes.
Earlier this month members of the Chamber’s zoning task force attended a joint meeting of the city’s Planning Commission and City Council, and advocated for policies that have been proven to help ease housing challenges like the one San Luis Obispo is currently facing. These policies include:
- more flexibility for mixed-use buildings
- maintain the city’s height regulations
- reduce parking requirements
- increase staff level review and approval of projects
The ideas and concepts shared by the Chamber volunteers were well received by the commission and council.
Add your voice to the conversation at the city’ s next public workshop on June 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where the public is invited to give feedback and learn about the zoning regulations update.
The updating process will continue through early 2018 and the Chamber will keep you updated throughout.
