Abraham Perez joins the San Luis Obispo Symphony staff as Music Education Director, effective February 15th. Perez has a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and Instrumental Performance and a Master of Music in clarinet performance from Cal State University, Long Beach. He served as a Graduate Assistant for the head of the woodwind department, managed various student groups to plan and execute high level performances for special events and taught clarinet studio master classes.
“We are thrilled to have Abraham join the Symphony staff and lead the Music Education program,” say Francie Levy, Symphony General Manager. “His organizational and music teaching credentials are impressive and we look forward to his leadership in advancing the music education mission of the San Luis Obispo Symphony.”
During his academic years, Perez worked as a Teaching Artist Liaison for the Young Musicians Foundation in Los Angeles. While there, he provided music instruction to children pre-K through 8th grade. He also was a woodwind instructor for the Anaheim City School District, providing instruction in clarinet, saxophone, and flute. He also learned to play the cello and is no stranger to string instruments, an important aspect of the Symphony’s Strings in the Schools programs now serving 10 county schools, five of which are Title 1 Schools. Mr. Perez said of his appointment, “I am passionate about music education and bringing the joy of playing music to our youth. What an opportunity this is to do so with the strong program the Symphony provides in our community!”
