JB Dewar recently announced that three high school students from San Luis Obispo County won its annual Tractor Restoration Program Education Competition, beating out more than 12 other students for this coveted award.

“JB Dewar actively supports each competitor from the very beginning of the restoration process and we couldn’t have had the success we and our students have experienced without the support of our local business community,” said JB Dewar President Ken Dewar.  “We are very proud of all the students who participated in this year’s competition as they worked tirelessly over the last year to fully restore their tractors to pristine condition.”

And the winners are:

  • First place winner is Casey Havemann, who restored a 1958 Case Terratrac 320.  Havemann, 17, is a student at Atascadero High School, and won $4,000 in prize money.
  • Second place winner is Josh Jorgensen, who restored a 1941 McCormick Deering 04.  Jorgensen, 15, is also a student at Atascadero High School, and came away with $3,000 in prize money.
  • Third place winner is Ben Foxford, who restored a 1961 Massey Ferguson 35 Diesel. Foxford, 16, is a student at San Luis Obispo High School, and earned $2,000 in prize money.

JB Dewar held the judging of the annual Tractor Restoration Education Program competition this past weekend where 15 students competed, and 10 restored tractors were on display. Typically, the tractor showcase and awards ceremony takes place at the California Mid-State Fair.  However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cancellation of the fair, the judging took place at JB Dewar’s headquarters in San Luis Obispo.

JB Dewar is now in its 20th year of the Tractor Restoration Education Program. In that time, more than 129 high school-aged students have participated in the program, restoring more than 87 tractors, and earning more than $110,000 in cash rewards. The dollars earned from the competition have gone toward college funds, vocational education and of course, tractor parts.

Each competitor puts an average of 350 hours of labor into their restoration projects. The physical restoration is only one aspect of the program. The competition is judged on three key components: the restoration, an oral presentation, and a written record book of their restoration journey. The goal is to provide a learning opportunity that will serve kids well no matter where their futures may take them. All students are encouraged to apply to the Delo National Competition on or before August 17, 2020.
