Habitat for Humanity San Luis Obispo County (Habitat SLO) is excited to announce the launch of its new DIY ReMaker Space at the San Luis Obispo ReStore. Made possible through the generous support of the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo and local donor Steve Urbani, this innovative community space will empower residents to restore furniture, learn handson skills and creatively reuse materials.

The public is invited to celebrate the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting on Tuesday, September 30 at 4 p.m. at the SLO ReStore, located at 2790 Broad Street, San Luis Obispo.

Currently under construction, the ReMaker Space will feature a fully equipped workshop with both hand and power tools. Designed for do-it-yourself projects, furniture restoration and cabinet assembly, it will provide a welcoming environment for those who may not have access to their own tools or workspace. “I’m so excited to open our ReMaker Space, it’s a place for the community to come together, share skills and build something meaningful with their own hands,” said Stephanie Wright, Habitat SLO ReStores Manager. “It’s all about hands-on learning and making DIY accessible to everyone. Let’s build something great, together.”

The ReMaker Space will also host free workshops led by local experts, and offer volunteer-led open hours each week.

“The Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo is proud to support Habitat for Humanity. Affordable housing is a fundamental right, and this space reflects Rotary’s commitment to ‘Service Above Self,’” said Brian A. Reynolds, President of the Rotary Club of San Luis Obispo.

In addition to providing a creative outlet, the ReMaker Space will serve as a hub for education, sustainability and community connection, welcoming DIY enthusiasts, students, seniors and families alike. Refurbished furniture created in the space can be sold in the ReStore, helping fund Habitat SLO’s affordable housing programs.

Community members can support the launch of this new initiative by donating gently used tools or making monetary contributions.

Requested Items Include: sawhorses (4), brad nailer, jigsaw, reciprocating saw, staple gun and staples, adjustable wrenches, pliers (needle nose, slip joint, locking), small levels, chisels, square/straight edge, table saw, drills, drill bits, Dremel clamps, wood burner, gloves, N95 masks, aprons and earplugs.

Habitat SLO is also seeking volunteer leaders to supervise open hours. ” We’re looking for volunteers to complete our free five-hour virtual Habitat training, which will allow them to help community members safely use power tools while working on projects,” said Colleen Stefanek, Habitat SLO Program Manager.

“Join us on September 30 at 4 p.m. for the ribbon cutting and experience the launch of the DIY ReMaker Space, ” said Wright. “It’s a place where creativity, community and Habitat’s mission come together.”
