The San Luis Obispo Symphony begins their 2023-2024 season on Saturday, October 7, 2023 with Classics I Rachmaninov Rocks. The concert begins at 7:30 PM at the Performing Arts Center SLO. Be sure to arrive early for a Symphonic Foray discussion between Maestro Andrew Sewell and a guest speaker. Symphonic Forays take place at 6:30 PM before each Main Stage concert.
This opening Classics concert features pianist Ilya Yakushev performing Rachmaninov’s mighty Piano Concerto No.2. Flanking this work we will feature two American works – Fanfare for an Uncommon Man by John Stevens and Symphony No.1 in e minor by Florence Price.
Maestro Andrew Sewell has spent countless hours creating programs for this season that are unique and inclusive. He has thoughtfully highlighted and showcased the works of women, Native American, and African American composers in each of the Symphony’s Classics Concerts. The Symphony’s opening concert features a work by Florence Price who was the first African American woman to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra.
If you can’t make it to the Symphony’s concert in the evening come to the Symphony’s family friendly No Ties Allowed dress rehearsal at 11 AM on Saturday, October 7 2023. No Ties Allowed dress rehearsals are a fun, casual, and engaging way to experience the Symphony. Get a sneak peek behind the scenes as Maestro Andrew Sewell leads the orchestra in rehearsal. No Ties Allowed rehearsals take place at 11 AM the day of each main stage concert, at the performing arts center SLO. Be part of a truly unique experience that lets you see exactly what it takes for an orchestra to master a piece of music. This is a free event, open to the public, and meant for all ages of music lovers! You do not need a ticket, just show up to the PAC and enjoy this truly unique experience. Parking is free too! The Symphony’s instrument petting zoo will be in the lobby so children young and old can make some noise on a variety of instruments!
