Play readings, community outreach and a timeless love story to start the new year, PCPA has many upcoming shows.

Gloria, by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, plays January 20 and 21 at 7:00 p.m. This funny, incisive, and powerful play follows an ambitious group of editorial assistants at a notorious Manhattan magazine, each of whom hopes for a starry life of letters and a book deal before they turn thirty. But when an ordinary humdrum workday becomes anything but, the stakes for who will get to tell their own story become higher than ever.

Sanctuary City, by Martyna Majok, plays January 19 at 7 p.m. and January 22 at 1:30 p.m. Majok weaves the powerful story of two young DREAMers who fight to establish a place for themselves in America, the only country they know as home. B & G become one another’s sanctuaries from the harsh realities of a world where they struggle to fully belong. But as time rushes on, triumphs and difficulties threaten to fracture this lifelong friendship, and raise the question of how much they’re willing to risk for each other when they have everything to lose.

Lumin by Emma Gibson plays January 21 at 1:30 p.m. and January 22 at 7:00 p.m. The pigs are stressed, Liv won’t eat, and Ma wants everyone to follow the Constitutions. Set in a modern-day commune on the outskirts of the Chihuahuan desert in Texas, the line between delusion and belief blurs in this new play about our powerful need for community. A new play in development, not yet premiered, this is a great opportunity to be part of the process and be one of the first audiences to experience Emma Gibson’s Lumin.

The River Bride, by Marisela Treviño Orta, is a story of folklore, love, regret and two sisters who struggle to be true to each other and their hearts. Set in a fishing village along the Brazilian Amazon River. Folklore has it that the River dolphin, or “botos”, at certain times, are transformed into human forms and come on shore to seduce the women of the village in hopes of finding true love and a wife within three days or they must return to their life of solidarity in the water. Playing February 16 through March 5 in the Severson Theatre, call the box office at 805-922-8313 or visit www.pcpa.org to purchase tickets.
