Fun fact: Dan O’Hare was named the California Newspaper Boy of the Year when he was 12. That was a couple of years off a four year stint in South Bend Indiana and a long ways away from the big chair at Glenn Burdette, where he currently resides.
The Porterville grown and Notre Dame learned O’Hare once spent an Indiana winter with a pile of snow as a roommate, due to a sizeable hole in the roof, and more than one summer in the heat of the Central Valley before finding his home in SLO.
Now an avid golfer on the verge of a professional tour, O’Hare recently finished a quick nine, took us on a golf cart tour of his life and spoke lovingly about Don Johnson, why caddying is an optional second career and how accountants help their spouses get to sleep.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Retiring to the senior golf tour would be awesome. However, despite my passion for the game, I really suck and should probably find a less humiliating way to spend my free time. Perhaps I could caddie for someone on the senior tour. There are only three rules to caddying, show up, keep up and shut up. I think I could handle this when I grow up.
Which living person do you most admire?
This is a tough one but I am going to say Lou Holtz, the epitome of over achievement with a wink and a smile. I would love to play 18 holes of golf with Coach and pick his brain about life in general.
Who would play you in the film of your life?
Another tough one but I have narrowed it down to the swashbuckling Tim Williams of SLO Chamber fame, a slightly younger version of Don Johnson (circa Tin Cup) or perhaps a taller version of Bob Costas. I think my golf swing is probably as bad as Don Johnson’s in Tin Cup so let’s go with DJ.
What do you most admire in other people?
I am horribly optimistic and always assume that everyone I meet is coming at things from the same cup is half full perspective. (To keep with the golf theme, this would be a tin cup by the way). So I guess, I admire the positive that I try to see in everyone.
So….California Newspaper boy of the year?
Yep. Got my picture taken with Senator Alan Cranston and a trip to San Diego.
Glenn Burdette is pushing 50, how do you keep the accounting flame alive after half a century?
At Glenn Burdette, we go beyond for our clients, for each other, for our firm and for our community. This unique blending of true professionalism with an emphasis on service to others is what stokes the fire for me.
What is your favorite accounting joke?
If an accountant’s spouse can’t sleep, what does he or she say? “Darling, could you tell me about your work?” My other favorite one liner is “Accountants aren’t boring people; we just get excited about boring stuff.”
