City of San Luis Obispo community members are advised to shelter in place until the National Weather Service rescinds its Flash Flood Warning at around 4:45 p.m. PST.  Local law enforcement reported heavy rain across the warned area producing dangerous flash flooding.

Up to three (3) inches of rain have fallen in San Luis Obispo County over the past several hours, according to the National Weather Service. Additional rainfall amounts of one to three (1-3) inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is already occurring. Life-threatening flash flooding can occur in creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.

Additionally, please be advised that all public counters at City facilities – including City Hall, Utilities Department, SLOPD, CDD, etc. – are closed today as many City staff are assisting with storm response work.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

  • Shelter in place unless you need to leave due to safety issues. If you need to evacuate, please go to the Marigold or Foothill Shopping Centers for assistance and shelter support.
  • Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads. In hilly terrain, there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads.

Please find more storm information at www.slocity.org/prepare. Please report any storm-related maintenance issues via Ask SLO or call the City’s non-emergency dispatch line at (805) 781-7312.  Report emergency requests to 911.
